How To Know If You Have a Migraine

A migraine is a headache that involves a throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation, commonly on one side of the head. It is often followed by nausea, vomiting, and experiencing extreme sensitivity to light and sound.

A migraine attack can last for hours to days, and the pain may affect your ability to carry out daily activities.

CAUSES OF MIGRAINE

There is no clear reason as to why a migraine occurs but some people find specific triggers for migraines.

Certain triggers that can cause migraines include:

  • For women – starting their period
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Stress or hormonal changes
  • Irregular eating habits or skipping meals
  • Too much caffeine intake
  • Not getting enough exercise or too much physical exertion

Some research shows that a person is prone to migraines if a close relative experiences migraines.

PRE-SYMPTOMS AND SYMPTOMS OF A MIGRAINE

Aura

An aura in relation to a migraine is a set of sensory, motor and/or speech symptoms that act as a warning sign of a migraine headache. The aura part can last as long as 60 minutes or as little as 5 minutes. Both the aura symptoms and headache can occur at the same time.

A day or two before a migraine begins, an individual may notice some changes. These include:

  • Constipation
  • Mood changes
  • Craving certain foods
  • Stiff neck
  • Frequent urination
  • Fluid retention
  • Too much yawning

Headache

A migraine headache lasts between four hours to up to 72 hours.

HOW IS A MIGRAINE DIAGNOSED?

A neurologist can help you diagnose whether your headache is migraine by conducting certain exams. They may also inquire about your biological family history and your medical history.

Additionally, they may ask questions regarding your symptoms and their duration, feeling and the area where the pain is felt and what makes it better or worse.
