Child Play Therapy in Lahore

Play therapy is a structured, evidence-based form of therapy designed specifically for children. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which relies on verbal communication, play therapy uses toys, games, art, storytelling and creative activities as the primary medium through which children express their feelings, process difficult experiences and develop healthier behaviours.

Children, especially those under the age of 12, often cannot articulate what they are feeling in words. An anxious child may not say, “I feel anxious.” Instead, they may act out, withdraw, have trouble sleeping, refuse to go to school or become aggressive. Play therapy provides a safe, age-appropriate space where a trained therapist can observe these behaviours, understand what the child is communicating through play, and guide them toward healing.

At TheraPlay Institute, our child psychologists use play therapy to help children in Lahore dealing with:

Emotional and behavioural difficulties: anger outbursts, emotional meltdowns, aggression, defiance, low self-esteem and difficulty managing frustration. Many parents notice these behaviours at home or receive complaints from school, but do not know what is driving them. Play therapy helps identify the root cause – whether it is anxiety, trauma, family stress or a developmental condition, and addresses it through therapeutic play.

ADHD and attention difficulties: children with ADHD struggle with focus, impulse control and hyperactivity. Play therapy, combined with behavioural strategies, helps these children develop better self-regulation, attention skills and organizational habits. Our team works alongside our consultant psychiatrists when medication assessment is also needed, providing an integrated approach to ADHD management.

Autism spectrum and developmental delays:  children on the autism spectrum or with developmental delays benefit from structured play-based interventions that target social skills, communication, sensory processing and adaptive behaviour. TheraPlay Institute uses ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) techniques alongside play therapy to support developmental progress.

Anxiety, fears and trauma: separation anxiety, school refusal, phobias, nightmares and the effects of traumatic experiences (parental conflict, loss, bullying, abuse) can all be addressed through play therapy. Children process trauma differently fr adults; play therapy allows them to work through difficult experiences at their own pace in a safe environment.

Speech and communication delays: children who are slow to develop speech, have difficulty expressing themselves, or show signs of selective mutism can benefit from our combined play therapy and speech therapy sessions. Our therapists use play-based speech activities to make language development engaging and natural.

Social difficulties and peer problems: children who struggle to make friends, have difficulty reading social cues, are frequently bullied, or withdraw from group settings can develop stronger social skills through structured group play activities and friendship-building sessions at TheraPlay.

How Play Therapy Works at TheraPlay Institute

When you bring your child to TheraPlay Institute, the process typically follows these steps:

Initial Assessment

One of our child psychologists meets with the parents first to understand the child’s history, current concerns, school performance, social behaviour and family dynamics. This may be followed by a behavioural or cognitive assessment of the child to identify specific challenges.

Therapy Sessions

Based on the assessment, your child begins regular play therapy sessions (usually weekly, lasting 45-60 minutes). Sessions take place in our dedicated therapy space equipped with age-appropriate toys, art materials and therapeutic tools. The therapist observes how the child plays, interacts with materials and expresses emotions, then uses guided techniques to address the identified concerns.

Parent Involvement

We keep parents informed about their child’s progress through regular feedback sessions. We also provide guidance on how to support your child’s development at home, including practical strategies for managing difficult behaviours, building emotional resilience and strengthening the parent-child relationship.

Progress Review

After a set number of sessions (typically 8-12), the therapist reviews progress with the parents and adjusts the therapy plan if needed. Some children improve quickly; others may benefit from longer-term support depending on the nature and severity of their challenges.

Play therapy is suitable for children aged approximately 3 to 12 years. For older children and adolescents (13+), our psychologists use age-appropriate therapeutic approaches such as CBT and talk therapy.

When Should Your Child See a Therapist?

It is common for parents to wonder whether their child’s behaviour is just a phase or something that needs professional attention. A useful rule of thumb is to look at how long the behaviour has lasted, how intense it is, and whether it is affecting your child’s daily life: their schoolwork, friendships, sleep, appetite or mood at home. A tantrum once a week is normal; daily meltdowns that last 30+ minutes are not. A shy child is normal; a child who has not made a single friend after a full school year may need support.

If you have been called in by your child’s school about behavioural or academic concerns more than once, if your child seems to be falling behind peers in development or communication, or if your own instinct as a parent tells you something is not right, those are enough reasons to book an initial assessment. You do not need a diagnosis or referral to bring your child in. Our psychologists will evaluate your child honestly and tell you whether therapy is needed, what kind, and what to expect.
